History
If you are looking for an angler who knows the most
exclusive, hidden spots for grand slams you have found him in Carlos
Vega.
Carlos Vega was born in
Cozumel, fishing runs in his blood, this wisdom having been passed
down through generations of native Mayan fisherman. His ancestors
bestowed their knowledge of their sacred fishing grounds upon him
and this was shared with him by his grandfather and father, who were
the first ligthouse keepers on the island in the 1930's.
A
native cozumelenian, Carlos has spent his whole life on these shores.
After World War II, the island was isolated unheard of as a tourist
spot. He helped support his family by fishing and diving for black
coral. Black coral was a major export in the 1950's and often required
divers to dive depths of over 200 feet! As his expertise in diving
grew, so did the reputation of Cozumel as a diver's paradise. As divers
began to arrive he worked as a dive master for 5 years, guiding other
master divers through the famous reefs and walls of palancar to depths
of 150 feet.
His first love
has always been fishing. As a youngster he began hand line fishing. One
day an America friend taught him how to spin fish and he was hooked. He
left guiding tourist under the ocean and began guiding them to the secret
places of his ancestral Cozumel and Cancun waters. He began Aquarius Travel
Fishing Representatives in 1975 as a deep sea fishing outfitter but his
real passion was for flat fishing the mangrove lagoons for bonefish, permit,
tarpon and snook, and from there envolved his flats fishing business.
25 years ago he was taught the art of fly fishing while working at Ascenstion
Bay (the famous Yucatan mangroves and sandy flats area) and added this
to his outfitter business.
Over the years Carlos has been featured in many major sports and fishing
magazines Florida Sport Fishing, Field & Stream, Fishing World, Fly
Fishing in Salt Water, The Florida Sportsman to name a few. Carlos has
appeared on ESPN incluing a feature fishing with "Mark Sosin".
20
years ago Carlos leased the beautiful virgin flats known as Isla Blanca
in Cancun. Here the angler will fish 10 square miles of flats and mangroves,
a perfect habitat for bonefish, permit, tarpon and snook. There are also
snapper, speckled trout, barracuda, small sharks and other shallow water
lagoon dwellers.
The boats
are custom made shallow draft boats, powered with 40 and 60 hp. Yamaha
outboard motors and they have plenty of room to cast. Spin and fly anglers
will enjoy the many options the crystal clear lagoons of Cozumel and Cancun
have to offer.
In
1998, Carlos added Enrique as a flats fishing guide. Enrique, a family
member, has been meticulously trained by the master himself. All his secrets
have been passed on and now Enrique shares the guiding with Carlos. Just
as an aside, Carlos has trained nearly every Cozumel flats fishing guide
himself, always willing to share his knowledge with others.
